H.R. 993 "Labor Management Accountability
Act" This bill would amend the
LMRDA to allow the Secretary of Labor to fine those unions that fail to file
annual reports. Currently, approximately 30% of unions files their
annual reports to the Department of Labor on time and many unions file their
reports up to two years late. Current law provides for fines for
fraudulent filings, but no penalties for failure to file.

H.R. 994 "Union Member
Information Enforcement Act"
This bill would amend the LMRDA to provide for a procedure whereby union members can submit complaints
to the Secretary of Labor regarding violation of their rights under the
LMRDA. Upon receipt of such complaints, the Secretary would conduct
investigations and work to remedy violations. Current law provides for
a cause of action in federal court for individual union members whose rights
under the LMRDA have been violated, but the high cost of civil litigation
serves as an impediment to most suits of this type.
